Portage trolleys withdrawn

Portage trolleys withdrawn

Mon 13 May 2013

When the Great Glen Canoe Trail launched in April 2012 we provided a full complement of portage trolleys along the route - at least one at each of the canal locks. Unfortunately during last summer a number of them were stolen and others were overloaded and broken beyond repair.  We even had reports of some paddlers attempting to stack 3 loaded canadian canoes on a single trolley!!

Unfortunately we just couldn't keep up with the repairs, nor afford to buy replacement trolleys, so this year we're asking paddlers to bring their own collapsible portage trolleys with them during their visit. Most hire companies can include portage trolleys as part of their hire kit if asked.

Some of the canal locks may continue to have trolleys available, but we just can't guarantee it, so better to be prepared and bring your own.

60 miles in 5 days

It is an epic 60 mile (95km) journey crossing Scotland in 5 days and conquering the formidable open waters of Loch Lochy and Loch Ness, a challenge in itself.

From South to North

It is normally easier to paddle the Trail from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east with the prevailing wind behind you.
