Plan a Paddle

Once you decide to take on the Great Glen Canoe Trail, there will be a number of factors to decide upon.

These include;

  • the type of craft (Open canoe, sea kayak or touring kayak)
  • group size (safety in numbers/ size of group for wildcamping)
  • experience in group (ability of paddlers including rescue skills)
  • guided or self guided (See Guided Trips page) 
  • duration of trail (is the trail route planned do able) 
  • food planning (Buying food on the trail will help reduce portage weight)
  • setting dates  (remember to register 7 days in advance for your canoe licence)

60 miles in 5 days

It is an epic 60 mile (95km) journey crossing Scotland in 5 days and conquering the formidable open waters of Loch Lochy and Loch Ness, a challenge in itself.

From South to North

It is normally easier to paddle the Trail from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east with the prevailing wind behind you.
