Planning your Trip

Once you decide to take on the Great Glen Canoe Trail, there will be a number of factors to consider.

These include;

  • the type of craft (Open canoe, sea kayak or touring kayak)
  • group size (safety in numbers/ size of group for wild camping)
  • experience in group (ability of paddlers including rescue skills)
  • guided or self guided (See Guided Trips page)
  • if your unpowered boats are small enough to portage or will you need to buy a licence
  • duration of Trail visit (have you allowed enough time to cover weather delays?)
  • food planning (buying food on the Trail will help reduce portage weight - see Food & Drink and Other Services Section further on)
  • setting dates  (remember to register your trip 5 working days in advance)
  • insurance (do you have canoe / paddler  insurance?)

Time spent planning will certainly ensure you have a safer and more enjoyable adventure - check out the topics above

60 miles in 5 days

It is an epic 60 mile (95km) journey crossing Scotland in 5 days and conquering the formidable open waters of Loch Lochy and Loch Ness, a challenge in itself.

From South to North

It is normally easier to paddle the Trail from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east with the prevailing wind behind you.
